BWLP January 2011
We were really feeling throwback this month. We talked to too many people who have a total 'good riddance' attitude about 2010. So we put some tracks together that have a timeless feel, heavy on the hip-hop but with spices of off beaten path tracks. We dip a little back with Lyrics Born- one down brother, on the real. We ran into him on the local Solano Stroll last year- he, wifey, baby- chillin' on the ave. Heavy on the NY tip too, basically because it always comes back to NY when you talk hip hop...but that's not all we added.. you can listen by clicking to the right.
But now, out major story this year was getting gaffled' by misleads on yelp or thrillist on dope spots to eat or fly gear...basically- not to diss:
But most quote, tastemakers, unquote- have got it all wrong.
For instance- I went to a spot that served local organic coffee but was spread that they did dope waffle breaded sammies for lunch and whatnot.
Heavy on the 'not'
As in the waffle machine was broken, at least 6 folks were sitting around waiting for their orders, the barrista didn't know his mocha from a hole in the ground.
I'm sayin'
I got mad expectations in a world class city like sf.
And yelp isn't much better.
Let's just put it this way- some of the illest spots will surprise you.
like this crazy nice pub across the street from the Kilowatt off 16th in the mission... where I dipped in and had the best organic soup, veggie sausage and a beer.
Don't sleep on old haunts like Zeitgeist- the manager there is so sweet pitching Sierra Nevada's latest holiday brew- which was actually the best I have ever had from them... and as far as beer goes Toronado still reigns supreme- of their out of something you used to know was good, they'll serve you something better than you imagined.
I'm as much to fault as anyone else though. GTFOH.... just walk, see what piques your interest, let your nose lead you too what smells right.
And, you'll be OK.
Now listen to this month's podcast!
(to catch the vibe around here while we prep for a potential NYE plan, have you some potato salad w/ bbq sauce, 7&7 and a peanut butter chocolate chip cookie- so hood!)
set list:
bwlp doin’ the talkie introduction, xmas card by begin, peace from the riddler by actual proof, rockin’ da house by dash & santos, coulda woulda shoulda by lyrics born, redman speaking on the state of def jam today, dawn from team anigma, bwlp doin’ girl first, lengualerta doin’ tu nombre, artifacts’ & ‘mad’ skillz dynamite soul remix, joell ortiz doin’ hip hop, skyzoo doing a skyzoo acapella joint, bwlp doing dimeword revival, talib kweli doin’ how you love me, schoolboy q- kendrick lamar- curtains doin’ live again, shing shing regime doing queen of the last monarchy, scotch davis doin’ welcome 2 skilla, syllables by eminem- jay z- cashis- dre- 50 cent- and stat quo, someday (remix) by talib kweli ft. torae & john robinson, en why cee by jugganot ft. joell ortiz & uncle murda, glennes proof by bwlp 11’, young kano the truth ft. chamillionaire doin’ leanin, actual proof doin’ the look, and closing out all this with lyrics born ft. francis the lights doin’ something better.
Happy New Year.

Yo , bust this..
I was like about to cop a squat at my new spot
and so I bounced over to IKEA. Dang. It was a Saturday too...up off in Emeryville, California on some five o' clock isht. What was I THINKING?
Nothing,..cause I wasn't. Fiending for $1 frozen yogurt on a plain cone
I sat in line 8 people deep for 15 minutes thinking,
"chill b. folks is employed and all... who otherwise wouldn't be,
so enjoy the scenery and wait fo' ya' gottm' vanilla freezy....& STFU."
But it wasn't easy, yo.
folks getting their dollah' hot dog, cinnamon buns with icing.
with mad folks outfitting little Suzie's first college flat,
or couples smooching like it's all gravy in the makeshift 5 some' n 'some square feet displays provokin the outer Martha Stewart in you ('cause the inna' would be having NONE OF IT!!)
wow. does it sound like i'm playa hating?!
Well, truth be told, i'm in grad school, about to get my own crib, and feeling a little tweaky seeing all the mad consumption.
a brother like me took my list of a few deals I might need,
and just asked the nearest attendant how to 'am' scray out that ibtch.
but not before nabbing a soft serve. fat free. a buck.
whocabeatdat?
It's all about the journey right?
Yeah. right.
I'll be rhyming again someday soon.
but not right now.

No Substitutes. J.R. Cash, The Great American Poet
Today, I have one inspiration: The Fabulous Johnny Cash.
Pickin' Time
circa (1958)
I got cotton in the bottom land
It's up and growin' and I got a good stand
My good wife and them kids of mine
Gonna get new shoes, come Pickin' Time
Get new shoes come Pickin' Time.
Ev'ry night when I go to bed
I thank the Lord that my kids are fed
They live on beans eight days and nine
But I get 'em fat come Pickin' Time
Get 'em fat come come Pickin' Time.
The corn is yellow and the beans are high
The sun is hot in the summer sky
The work is hard til layin' by
Layin' by til Pickin' Time
Layin' by til Pickin' Time.
It's hard to see by the coal-oil light
And I turn it off purty early at night
'Cause a jug of coal-oil costs a dime
But I stay up late come Pickin' Time
Stay up late come Pickin' Time.
My old wagon barely gets me to town
I patched the wheels and I watered 'em down
Keep her in shape so she'll be fine
To haul my cotton come Pickin' Time
Haul my cotton come Pickin' Time.
Last Sunday mornin' when they passed the hat
It was still nearly empty back where I sat
But the preacher smiled and said that's fine
The Lord'll wait til Pickin' Time
The Lord'll wait til Pickin' Time.

Stats. Interesting
See Graphic Attack! Before It's Over and Out!!
I couldn't cop photo's until the Bay to Breakers this morning.
Had to wade through all the drunken debauchery.
But Seriously.
See the show.
It's curated by some really heavy hitter art gals: Brooklyn gallery driver Melissa Mc Craig Welles and NYC's super ridiculously uber-skilled Andrea Von Bujdoss.

Cope2 Interview in Juxtapoz, May 2010
Okie doke, like I told you all back on Cinco De Mayo, Cope2 is dope.
And, it looks like over the past few days he's been up to was' good in SF.
(the timing is a bit haunting...) Imagine my surprise to see this tag splash as I was on my way with Son & family to the De Young for an event Friday night 5/14.....the interview with dude just popped up from Juxtapoz on Thursday!
And I had to see all the Plasma stuff and Mike Giant collab stuff in the Tenderloin/Market area...
I just wanted to jump out the car right there and snap photo after photo of all the illness!!!!
But sometime it's gotta be about the fam.'
No hope for Saturday photo shooting either with Peter Pan on tap....
hmmmmm.
It's ok. I'll get graf shots before the weekend is over...and play more guitar.
Some live performance is coming up in the next few weeks- an acoustic version of an Arboreal remix.
Hip hop is alive and well.
So bust the Cope & Fairey collab flick: the Bronx from the Juxtapoz May 2010 online interview Pt.2
It could be set to be like a MAD summer yo.

Emetic Landscape is Coming to Town!
Well, that's not ENTIRELY true. One half of us will be in NYC- that would be a one DJ Monte Carlo. But the other half, yours truly, will be at Lafayette Elementary School on Cinco De Mayo to celebrate their new status as West Oakland Musical Academy at Lafayette in 2010-2011. Sooooo, it looks like you get to hear a little of the emcee known as BWLP live in new merch'and belting out a 3 track set. One a cappella, one acoustic, and one electronic cut to close it out.

Peace is NOT Hate
The controversial letter presented by Solaar regarding Keith Elam's passing has ignited a maelstrom of controversy regarding the vitriol for DJ Premiere.
You don't have to look further than the legacies of Tupac and Biggie to know that resting in 'peace' is almost impossible when the subjects in question are of incalculable influence.
Yes G.U.R.U. was an incredibly talented, focused, magnificent emcee; a powerful and consistent writer and bearer of tight rhymes. He was- without question an essential ingredient in Gang Starr with Primo, whom together, their musical legacy will forever speak for itself. Thank the Universe for that.
As a Teacher, I get to drop a gem on my students that makes the social study of Jazz music and it's expansion relevant and accessible: Jazz Thing, by Gangg Starr. I didn't hesitate to craft a lesson plan around this audio spectacle that will shine forever. The lyrics are cast in finery with the adjunct of DJ Premiere's instrumentalist mastercraftwork as a background.

The World's Not Over Yet...Oakland to SF at Low Tide
This Summer some of my musician cohorts will be doing a few geurilla-style out door shows. Probably at sites that look a lot like this.
The world's not over yet.
Maybe that should be the title with everybody wondering if all the folks in Iceland will eventually all the calcium in their bodies be slowly replaced by flouride due to the high toxicity of the volcanic ash from the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull (ay-yah-FYAH'-plah-yer-kuh-duhl) [ yes a REAL concern... ]
The truth is, as many have stated, Nature is not intent on making life difficult.
We're just here, in many cases trying to live in accordance with it.
(however, not those past and presently working for Goldman Sachs!)
There's still an open ended war on. A new age nuclear arms race is in full swing. (heck, what's a reduction when you've ALREADY got enough to obliterate everyone thousands of times over)
And still, groups are rehearsing their routines, be it skipping, hip hop dance, uninterrupted rhymes, mixing, remixing, or...
just flat out reduction.
Such introspection prompts a new focus for us at BWLP. When you already ARE hip hop; doing it daily... the culture aspect is always about and alive. Why promote our own brand of that? Who cares. What IS interesting, at least to me as one constantly intrigued by the world around us, is perspective and story.
Rhymes, perspective and story.
Graffiti? Perspective and story.
Snapshots? Perspective and story.
Inner evolution, consumption, humanity, each-one-teach-oneness', instrumentals, skating skills, musicality, motivations....
you got it.
If we offended anyone previously for our naivitee here, we apologize.
It's a new time. We'll be biggin up eveyone and everything we enjoy and giving credit and props to those who make it happen and create it.
And currently, we're jazzed about these folks who keep it moving...

bwlp April Dropping Later Today
Say you just want to get the f*% out of the way and break off to paradise. Absolutely due to what is NOT popping off as it should be around your way. Power brokers all up in your franchise are blowin’ it left and wrong. Relatives just aren’t getting it. Homies and homettes are showing true i.q’s of blank polyurethane figurines fresh from Japanese molds.
Take heart, friends on the lamb. Go to Kerala. We’d go with you from the jump. But this month is not what you’ll hear when you get there...it’s what you should hear on the plane to get you out of what you’re in, right now. When you get to Kerala. Just go into ‘I’m-a-get-back-to-that-in-a-minute’ mode.
You shouldn’t be needing us for awhile.

Going back to the lab for awhile.
We may go back to the monthly mixtape thing but there's pressing matters afoot.
We'll still have one lens on the street as well as our ears.
Have a wonderful closeout to your March, 2010.
Take care one and all.

Nebulae Lyrics
today...on my birthday i wrote a new song, programmed the beats..have yet to solidify the acoustic guitar bits..so before i record the track
i thought i'd come real true like and hit the public with the verses:
have a good day to one and all!
-b.phlecksi parmella

Ears to the Streets
So our latest video features some art work from the notorious 'Stick Alley' in San Francisco's Mission district. The SF Chronicle ran a piece on muralist, Dan Rauch's project to put up honorable graf pieces to thwart taggers from defacing often vandalized walls about the town. He teamed up with our local fave Mark Bode (pronounced boh-dee)and urban icon Mike Giant to force field the Episcopal Church of St. John.
Peep the flicks. We also feature some of this alley from last week's photo shoot for our 'arsenal' video now posted up at our podcast site.
There's a link to the article to the right under: Rauch, Bode, and Giant
