Cold Burn.
strangely familiar in different times.
finally arriving after not so little drama in 2012,
we bring to you a set of music that we like
in exactly the way we like to hear it.
enjoy, as we go out this year with something
spectacular, if only in it's honesty of freshness.
each artist does their damn thing.
we live in a world of repeatedly alarming incident,
yet the beauty of nature and it's capacity to remain
our environment holds us in it's own stillness of motion.
we at BWLP believe that music contains that very essence
of sustenance when isht truly goes down.
the Incendiary Diaries edition does it like we do.
play it and keep on keeping on with flavor and mad skills.
2013 WILL see a return of fresh and smart editorials over remixed extensions.
this new era needs all the conscientiousness it can get.
but here, allow us to present to you: Mr. Dibiase, Flying Lotus, Joey Badass, Dailon, Busta & Birdman, Alix Perez, Suzi Analogue & Swarvy, Nefarious!, Dusky, Submotion Orchestra, Mayhem x Antiserum, Fel Sweetenberg, Angelo Moore and Fish, Malvina Reynolds, First Aid, JayLotus, Proflogik, and of course...BWLP.

Smarts have been around for a loooooong time, folks.

Nature. Look But Don't Touch!
hogwash!!!
before i post where to see David Sobel tell most eloquently how nature builds a naturalist...
i'll begin with what has got to be my favorite quote of the summer:
...As John Burroughs once said, “Knowledge without love will not stick. But if love comes first, knowledge is sure to follow.”
David Sobel goes on to say: "It’s our responsibility as parents and teachers to make sure that love comes first."
i would add...as 'people' it is our responsibility towards one another.
funny how love is always in season!
now go read David Sobel in the most recent Orion, here.
picture of Haley's Fort in Bolinas, CA.
Yann Gross Takes Pictures. Really Important Ones.
...and he's got a few stories to tell.
find out about the first East African skaters.
here.
no shame in the 'each-one-teach-one' mentality when it comes to skating.
living the credo with my son, myself these days.

Clinic On Fresh. Sinead. I Am...
Stretched Out On Your Grave.
somebody reminded us of how realness under any time, era or circumstances
just comes on through.
like my dad, used to say 'e',
"you sho know what to say outcha mouth."
dang. Sinead just starts highland stepping at the end of this live version.
my homegirl remembers her performing this live with Public Enemy in the 80's.
yes, sillies!!
the 80's.

quite Elan.

Tweekin Records Reunion. Go. Dance.
222 Hyde Street.
San Francisco, California.
Sunday, July 22nd@ 8 pm.
Bionic is a party that was put on regularly by the grand kids that ran Tweekin' records in the lower Haight in the 90's.
Many names come to mind, co-pilots of many a night danced away!
Garth. Jeno. Darren. Jason. Big Lee. Marjorie. Hardkiss. Marky. Corey.
These names and many many more were instrumental in defining the SF electronic sound
among the renaissance-esque atmosphere that was home to Zebra Records, Faster Bamboo, The Top, Nicky's, Mad Dog in the Fog (sunday record spins by Formaggios Kirsten & Richard!!) IZ, Al Simmons, Mark Farina, Bulletproof, Mikebee, Groovetech Live streaming, Audio Angel... the mid-nineties were a straight-up creative hay-day of musical hay-makin.
(need-kinda' needless to say where bwlp got his spoken word start on...)
awwww isht, don't even get me started.
But if you want a slice of that old school electro disco, groovy (and even yes, funky) vibe, GET yourself to this party.
you'll see loads of hugs, kisses, and a$$ shakin' going down!

LUTHER is our new GO TO!!!
Ruth Wilson. Idris Elba.
SAY WORD!! I thought, seriously, we'd never enjoy ANYTHING after binging like an addict on Breaking Bad from start to finish.
So imagine our surprise as netflix is so good at catching sleepers up in an 'act-like-you-shoulda-known' kinda way by making what was dope two years ago, available for the massess to peep.
not really mad consuming, but good writing is good writing.
LUTHER is dope. straight dope.
it's been a minute.
here's a run down on other summer faves, thus far:

sooooooo. it's been a minute.
what can we say; well, we WERE at the Golden Gate Bridge
75th Anniversary celebration last night....
along with several thousand other people last night.
seriously
hoofing it all the way back to BART from the Marina Green was a task
that has left us all slept in 'till noon around here.
but look closely at the photo.
this fireworks display was something to see in a lifetime.
the opening fireworks were something out of a movie...
truly.
the bridge lit from two fuses of fireworks that traversed the bridge
from north AND south ends to meet in the middle, THEN to
cascade down into the water in waterfall of fire.
bada$$.
it was absolutely killer.

Prometheus. Time to Go Back to the Movies, June 8th!!
I love summer movies.
(who doesn't love a dark cozy place to do sci-fi and smooch popcorn?!)
If you can't wait 'til summer, you can always take Hayao Miyazaki up on his rendition of the Borrowers in his 'The Secret World of Arrietty
- if you can stand Disney's not-so-age-appropriate trailers for stories of fatherless boys, island nations soon-to-be-underwater, and ditched monkey babes (at the movies when you go...)
but i digress.
And with the school year winding crazy up before a heckuva down,
seeds of fanciful distractions, by Ridley Scott, down the line are much welcome...
no worries.
there'll be tears before cocoa yet.

"Honey my name's Slick Rick, not Foster Friess!"
You Couldn't Make This Isht Up.
John Amato Reports On The 'contraception' Comment...
Andrea Mitchell had on Rick Santorum's Super PAC money man Foster Friess this morning during her MSNBC telecast. Mitchell asked him about the potential problems Santorum could have with women voters because of his stance on contraception and women in the military. Foster's response was so stunning that it froze Andrea in her tracks.
Mitchell: Do you have any concerns with some of his comments on social issues, on contraception on women in combat and whether or not it would hurt his viability in a general election campaign were he to be the nominee?
Freiss: Well I get such a chuckle when these things come out. Here we have millions of our fellow Americans unemployed, we have Jihadist camps set up in Latin America which Rick has been worried about and people seem to be so preoccupied with sex, I think it says something about our culture and maybe we need a massive therapy session so we can concentrate on the real issues are.
This contraceptive thing, my gosh it's such inexpensive, back in my days we used Bayer aspirin for contraception, the gals put it between their knees and it wasn't that costly.
Mitchell: Um, excuse me I'm trying to catch my breath from that Mr. Friess, frankly....( Friess chuckles) ...
I'm speechless too. Why was Friess chuckling? He could use a ton of therapy sessions, not the country. Women have been continually degraded in this Republican primary season and ever since the GOP took back the House. How has the national dialogue on women's reproductive rights get so degraded now that now GOP supporters bring up "aspirin-between-the-knees" as a real method of contraception?
It's a mad house.

Heritage Skate. Watching Rising Son. 2012
Summer, 1989
The SECOND memory that came to mind was when I worked at a small bakery in Berkeley back in 89’ when Jim Thiebaud came in. Just outside Christian Hosoi and Tony Hawk were in the car waiting in the parking lot....like it wasn’t nothing but a thang.
That brought back memories...of my time skating Milpitas in the early 80’s..it was like right there in Berkeley, GIANTS were outside. KINGS. At Gilman & Sante Fe.
Ill.
Winter, 2012
I was amazed at Steve Caballero’s vintage footy of back-in-the-dayness.
It’s the kind of thing that you would remember if you skated in Milpitas or San Jose in the early 80’s.
And seeing Gator was just straight up, crazy. He was my favorite skater then, well, until THAT happened.
Needless to say, life trumps skate skills- but soul cannot be extracted from pure skating.
If you do it, you know what I mean. Heck I STILL rock a deck and I’m going on sumpin’ frickin’ 3!!
It wasn’t the obvious objective of the film, but I FELT it.
I think Rising Son affirms that a bit.
So I’ll be throwing the decks in the Jeep. Today my son and I will skate. And I promise not to bring him to tears by demanding we quit after an hour...he’ll want to keep at it.
Today, I’ll want to too (if only fueled by pure nostalgia.)
Tooling around in a little town called Emeryville.
PS
I kind of tripped at the obvious omission of Tommy Guerrero in anything other than contest stats [...often as taking first place in Street.]
2012, ladies & gentlemen, is the year of Elan; elegance, truth in experience, living what you love and loving what you live.
We'll be shining on it.

Pine Island Glacier: Yup. Both Poles Are Losing Ice.
Yup. Yup. North America out West has been pretty darned dry. And folks are yelping it up about Colorado's snowfalls. Mother Nature can do anything she wants; but the question is, "Will Mother Nature want to make up precipitation levels to make up for an unusually dry December through January?"
We'll see.
Meanwhile, ABC news is on some October 2011 news by reporting on the Pine Island Glacier for the masses. The other question is, "Why is mainstream America so late on global climate issues when we have world class publications like Orion dedicated to nature preservation or awareness of how 'nature bats last'?
This from NASA:
"In mid-October 2011, NASA scientists working in Antarctica discovered a massive crack across the Pine Island Glacier, a major ice stream that drains the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Extending for 19 miles (30 kilometers), the crack was 260 feet (80 meters) wide and 195 feet (60 meters) deep. Eventually, the crack will extend all the way across the glacier, and calve a giant iceberg that will cover about 350 square miles (900 square kilometers). This image from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument on NAS's Terra spacecraft was acquired Nov. 13, 2011, and covers an area of 27 by 32 miles (44 by 52 kilometers), and is located near 74.9 degrees south latitude, 101.1 degrees west longitude."
Wanna know more?
Check out the National Science Foundation's Office of Polar Programs; which has funded an investigation of the ocean circulation and ocean-ice interaction in the seawater-filled cavity below Antarctica's Pine Island Glacier.
btw: Orion Magazine has been a cold crush of ours for years. Catch up.

Toph Recovery Fundraiser Jam
in one week it goes down; if you can't attend you can always help this brother out here.
last Sunday night, January 7th Dj Toph One was struck in SF at Ocean and Geneva by a driver who fled the scene.
simply put, Toph is a solid dj who mad represents as an Aids Lifecycle activist, old-school-keeper-of-the-flame when it comes to wrecking shop with viny in all styles and genres.
he's a dope graf head who know's his hip hop history, sf party history, skate heritage:
you name it.
he's doper than you might know.
but 7 days later, my man is all hemmed up with a broken pelvis, but alive.
no doubt there's bills to pay, but life as pedal bound vinyl slinger has not a rich man made.
so if you can, get down with the get down, get your groove on next weekend and help out.
