It's coming...

It’s November 27, 2008 and there are an indefinite amount of questions facing our future. Is it true that Barack Obama has instilled excitement and entitlement in many of us who feel and believe in the change he has espoused all along his pursuit of the United States presidency? Has the consciousness of black America been elevated towards the highest level of governance in this land? And if so, how will the soulful sounds of this country respond in kind? And if a hunt for foreigners with American passports goes down in Mumbai, India on a day like, say, yesterday, how will the soul of a black man respond? Am I speaking of Obama or the next ‘Trane, Bird, Hancock, or Duke? Does foreign policy mired in a historical continuum crusade of Christianity, Zionism, and Muslim clashes rate against the domestic travesty of a hurricane Katrina? Does it? How?

We’re posing a few higher level social questions out there to the hip hop community because our new era has brought the responsibility of change to your doorstep. Electing Obama was a wonderful thing. Now, we’re going to have to have his back in the form of a conscious citizensry ready to move the world forward in positive directions. December heralds the most important Birds Who Like Pomegranate mixed media music magazine to date.

It’s hip hop and news outside your zone- from our neck of the woods in the mixed-use Potter Creek district of Berkeley, California. Until then, I’m b.phlecksi parmella of mAkE nIcE wishing you and yours a FRESH holiday season.

holiday cheer!

On Wednesday, November 26th, we roll out our holiday instrumentals compilation series with the first volume by dj frank niao. D'oiseaux Recordings has got your holiday background checked with upcoming independent instrumental versions from mAkE nIcE.

It's bass heavy; a sophisticated collage of dance floor hip tantalizers to harbinger head nodders! There simply won't be anything this sexy and diverse to add to your mixers this year. With the financial crisis upon us all, this 16 track collection will be available for $5 through December 15, 2008.

History, Posters and Vocabulary

November 5th 2008
Something great big and important has occurred.
Barack Obama has been elected as the 44th President of the United States of America.
It is historic because he is African American, in light of the turbulent history towards people who have been considered minorities in terms of their social power, this is a feat that speaks to every American and person outside of our borders.

Personhood
Barack Obame being elected by the majority of this country’s diverse citizenry says to the world that WE CAN aspire towards an ideal. We as Americans can aspire towards greatness and can accomplish what humanity deserves: decency, humility and a commitment to come together to work towards peace and personhood. That’s right, personhood: sisterhood, brotherhood, partisan-hood, racial-hood, and cultural-hood. The very act of Obama becoming our 44th president shows the world unflinchingly that we are evolving towards loftier aspirations than what we have currently achieved in this country- for our world.

How Do You Spell OBAMA?
I could explain the details of my take on the evolution. But I think I can best express how this translates from an experience with my 2nd and 3rd grade combination class at a ground zero of financial and resource poverty in a distinctive part of Oakland, California. On Tuesday, November 4th, 2008- yesterday, I gave an assignment to my students. I had a training to attend for half a day so the assignment had to be completed after I was gone. The activity required them to put their weekly vocabulary words in alphabetical order on a poster with a title and a nice border.
At the onset of the activity one of the first questions an eight-year-old asked another was, “How do you spell Obama?”

Allensworth
My substitute arrived soon after and I was out. As an aside, to my utter surprise, the arrival of my substitute presented none other than a distinguished 70’s-ish African-American gentle man of fair skin, blue eyes, straighter hair, whom was a member of the Allensworth historical organization. I immediately recognized him from from his visit to my classroom where he appeared in period costume to my class in January of this year. But at the time I was teaching in another school district alltogether! For those of you who don’t know, Allensworth is the only town to be founded, financed and governed by African Americans on August 3, 1908. Colonel Allen Allensworth, the norther California community’s founder, was previously one of Kentucky’s delegates to the Republic national convention in 1880 and 1884. (see full details at: http://www.friendsofallensworth.com/allensworth/allensworth_history.html)

Digression
I don’t mean to digress, but as a firm believer that there are no accidents, but mere unfolding of what is to be- I felt something freaky going on. Suffice to say, what and when things occur in our lives- truly shape who we are. You can either be present and take it all in- or die in ignorance.

100%
When I returned to my class, I returned to posters where the alphabetization was completely on point- albeit secondary to the messages about Barack Obama. All 20 of my students are African American with the exception of one: he is Latino.
“Go OBAMA”
“OBAMA!”
“WE LOVE YOU OBAMA!”
..are just a few of the banner inscriptions. And, there were Obama portraits that consumed more space than the alphabetized vocabulary- 100% accurate by every student.

Welcome to a Small Piece of Change.

An American Economic Crisis: So what?

Those Who Dance..
I learned how to read by comic book. They were 35 cents and in a wide variety at the bodega in my hood when I was in the 3rd grade in Richmond California. I can still remember a line from one of the bad guys in some alternate universe of that era, “those who dance, must pay the piper!” I think that came from a Spiderman arch nemesis.
But now that phrase has transgressed into our real world- 2008 with respect to our country’s money center: wall street.

On September 15th two of the United States largest private money lenders, Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy- meaning they went out of business. Days later Merrill Lynch was absorbed by Bank of America. And AIG, one of the largest international lending firms had to be taken over by the Federal Reserve (the government).

Oh, That Was You Out There!
These private institutions run our money system.
If you or someone you know has a retirement account- money you can’t touch and will get when you retire- that money went to lenders like these. You get paid over time for ‘allowing’ these banks to invest your money- so when retirement comes, you have a little extra cash. except in the event these banks go under. And they have. So you now see why this is such a big deal. These banks took extraordinary risks for profit, and got stuck with loans that many couldn’t or wouldn’t pay back. And it’s also why you hear John McCain calling Wall Street greedy. And why you hear Barak Obama blaming the Bush administration for allowing these conditions to flourish- which they did.

At the center of this money market catastrophe is what you’ve no doubt heard of as the ‘Subprime’ lending practice. Basically, banks started handing out credit where if you failed to ever make a payment on time, interest could change your monthly payment to something you could no longer afford. and that was in the fine print of every loan signed for. Should you blame the people who went out and got those loans? All that glitters ain’t gold perhaps? Or should you blame the banks for signing folks up and not adequately revealing the deets’ of the loan? Hmmm.

Bush the Conductor
It doesn’t matter, because everybody’s hip to the script now that major financial institutions got caught holding these loans that either no one would ever pay back, or couldn’t pay back.

Now remember back in 07’ when housing was being build like crazy because populations were rising? Thats’ called demand. And remember when the housing market slowed? There were many houses and not enough buyers- and then came the practice if subprime lending. tapping into a population of people that were a bit more risky in making consistent payments over time. And don’t forget George Bush’s stimulus checks that were supposed to give an added boost of cash in peoples’ pockets. The only problem with that was that at that very moment in our history his primary backers (the oil industry) were about to catch wreck and make it’s biggest profits in history. See, he’s a president on the way out and he began to pay his folks on the back end!

In January of this year, oil prices surpassed $100 a barrel for the first time ever topping out at $147. I knew families that had to chose between driving their kids to school or eating that week as price per gallon threatened the $5 mark here in the Bay. The price of rice went up, dairy, there was a Salmonella tomato outbreak and lettuce e coli wave across the country too. California didn’t have a state budget signed until mid September. Student loans were on hold. State instructor salaries were on hold. Nationally, sulphuric Acid, a key component of steel and copper manufacturing reportedly increased SIX times this year. And to make matters worse, a whole lot of greedy people hoodwinked folks into thinking that buying a house, with loans that would grow beyond your payments was a good idea. I mean you put money down or start paying- and the cost of the house actually grows! Some people got into really dodgy Adjustable Interest Rate loans. In any case, people start off paying a small amount, but that monthly grows over time. Many people were told, “don’t trip, you can refinance into something more affordable in the future!” damn.

The trend was so seductive that loan lenders who either worked on commission or as a matter of course became addicted to a little extra cash at common folk’s expense. When payment rates changed and people went from paying like $700 monthly home payments to $2100- people just weren’t able to do it.

And the loans grew. The banks were left holding the ticket. People got kicked out. And honest folks who have retirement money in plans called 401k’s- money taken from their paychecks to be set aside and invested in funds on Wall Street- saw their money get smaller and smaller. That means your auntie can’t retire if she’s 65 now, or she’ll get say : $500 a month instead of the $1500 to $2000 she would’ve received IF THIS HADN’T HAPPENED.

Whatchu’ Gwan’ Doo’ Nah’
So you might be thinking- for real hip-hop heads- if you’re already caught up in the struggle and don’t have a retirement and everyday is a hustle- it means things just got a little more expensive- everywhere. And what you could once buy for a dollar, just might cost you four...this year alone. Dubs cost more. McDonald’s cost more. Bodega cost more.

You’d better start reading the paper, gods. And start stacking your chips, privately..cause George Bush’s administration just set us up for the biggest money heist since the Great Depression of the early 1900’s. Exercise more, you might find you don’t have time or need all those things you once felt you could no longer live without. And you’ll have more money in your pocket.

I’m b.hlecksi parmella and this has been a national news report for Birds Who Like Pomegranate.

Back in Oaktown

hey,

my father used to always say, 'get to steppin'.
i dunno' maybe 'cause he was always steppin'; around, out, about...he was a restless soul.
we used to wake up every morning between 3&4. i mean he did. but if i caught him sitting up by candle light, he there at the table with a cup of cowboy style coffee (boiled grounds), we'd be up in a flash ready to take an early morning drive.
usually we'd go to the airport and watch the airplanes take off.

forgive me, but there something about the town right now that has me reminiscing.

i'm back in the bay, and was steppin' my damned self out at the tracks in E.O.
i didn't have much time in between a training and an after hours appointment.
taking care of business.

at the tracks.
there was something bright and beautiful there, the flix are here.
i thought about these on the way home- as it sat in a series of zeros and ones in the form of something digital.
knowing i had just picked up something more soulful than the case it was in..when

a scraper went by bumping something deliciously discreet- below pop radar and ridiculously groovy. the windows were up and it wasn't loud enough to make out...
soulful brothers in a soulful case.

just a late Summer commute hour; Fruitvale in the East O.

i'll let you check 'em for yourself...

Peoria Mellow

hey,

just returned from a week in Peoria, Illinois- where the lightning storms are spectacular and embroidered butterfly New Era caps can be left at a relatives house from being left on an antenna to get good reception!
dang.
(throw it in the box to be shipped to Cali' with all those pristine Ebony magazines from 1968,please)
so we flew on out in search of a few good things in the world of hip-hop and came up kinda busted.
no R.A.M.A., no connects came through,... not enough time to play sleuth, i guess.

but now bust this, new Berkeley hip-hop group Make Nice now have a myspace page where you can catch a few of their latest tunes from their debut EP, Pirates!
http://www.myspace.com/hiphopmakenice

just so you know they are working out big time go make their first hometown gig a blast. stay tuned for the October date and venue.

any who,

on the graf tip- the Oakland tracks have been graced with some HOT isht that we're flashing today. have camera, will travel. AND bwlp will be have a 'greatest' printline of tees that pay homage to what's new and ill and presently up. which can be a challenge. but we're immortalizing our faves for tees' fresh for you available at our BWLPetsy shop in October: small/med/lg- white only at the moment. limited runs. hand -made. hand wash, delicates....and DOPE.

why would WE front?

and here's a fresh lyric from a bootleg of a Make Nice untitled track floating around the office...

"me..

internal beat never quit
confetti recipe adrenaline
anticipate

momentarily
within a present fit
inherently connected
physical link
exhibit

eyes closed
legs outstretched
in a sit

the meditative
explained
personal
intimate"

hmmm. that parmella kid's got flow. we think the track is called 'meditation'- rumor has it.

Inspiraton: eMC & AFTA-1

ss’me yo.
wow. one thing about emceeing...
REAL hip-hop inspires you.
Just feeling a little Organized Konfusion, Akinyele, Company Flow, and it put me in the proper state of mind to finish a cut that was screaming for me to dig deeper into my soul for the last verses. And I felt just about to throw up, but eMC pushed me over the edge.
See, if you write, you need hip hop to inspire you to go at it up a level. You have to- and it must be YOUR thing. Like graf. Anyone can learn technique: letters, fill in's, what have you...but now..
back to the music...

...’tell you what I mean.

Masta Ace has straight California love (we car culture up and down, West motha f&%n' Side), simply for his ‘Born to Roll’ cut from 1988. Dude (Duval Clear) was born same day as my son, December 4th. ‘cept M.A. was hatched back in 66’. My little 'm' blessed me in 2004.
So imagine, could YOU reinvent yourself with a straight up dope rhyme crew like EMC when YOU’RE 42 years old? (email me when you get there, son...or ‘fille’)
yo, i’m SMILIN here!
c’mon yo, COULD YOU?!
just check out ‘EMC, what does it stand for?’ or better yet, ‘On the Grind’
better yet, find and listen to Masta Ace’s ‘Born to Roll’ and see what an amazing feat it is to stay ill 20 years later.
really, it’s a feat.
That just goes to show you how down and truly fresh this cat is.

And from the sounds of talent and the status of the industry these days, folks might have to get that old, just to make hip-hop right.
But of course there are exceptions.

The great thing about the underground is that no matter what you’ve heard or think, real good music is always there- you’ve just yet to discover it.

btw, i want to give a little shine to a real tight brother who’s making some ill chill music for your lounging pleasure: AFTA 1
pick up his new stuff entitled, Aftathoughts Vol.1, if you likes...
no kidding. it’s the realness, particularly when you want to hear something fresh and not sampled and recycled....not that there’s anything wrong with that! (tee, hee)
Catch up with this fellah’ at http://www.myspace.com/afta1

at your service,

Dennis: Pop Dutch Discovery

Freaky deak.
Okay player.
Theres’ a lot of pop shine glowin’ up bay area rappers the ‘Bayliens’ these days.
So what did we do? Like any self respecting netster we hit up YouTube for a listen and a look-see.

Well, it was ok. Let's be kind...these brothers are getting their hustle on. And it looks like press. So big up's to ya. Kids need a little sprinkle too! (yo, we're smiling, here!)

There was also something else that was OK.

Her name is Dennis.
Braces. Soulful little Dutch bird.
