More Countdown...

we had to just pick one of our favorite editions to showcase for the last day before August '11 starts wil'in out on us. This was one of two December '08 broadcasts. One was dedicated to Miriam Makeba, and this one, was dedicated to Odetta Holmes. Both lovely black women passed around the same time that year. So we just sent out the vibes doing what we do. Featuring: Main Source, K15, MF Doom, Seun Anikulapo Kuti, Floating Points, Michel'le...and many more.

P.S. next week we bounce to Asilomar for a few days in seclusion for the acoustic remix of Life Arsenal armed with 2 guitars, electronic sampler, and a 4 track mixer...for the final draft- real raw- acoustic EP version. Inspired by the writing of Treme's post-Katrina-pocalyptic and the love and excitement for early hip hop as expressed by the latest Cool Kids release.

Frank. Sadness. And Maybe Now Some Peace.

So many things have been said about Miss Winehouse.
All I can say is that I'm deeply saddened, but appreciative of the music she left with us.

Last month I bought her 1st album, Frank. It came out 7 years ago. It sounds soooooo good that when I received it in the mail, I played it every day for like 2 weeks straight. Seriously, I'm not kidding. Anyone with the power to get one excited about music- put songs into your head and life- and keep them there, I commend those folks who can do such a thing to make our lives more live-able.

I remember my 26, 27, and 28 very well: Saturn Returns. What I remember most about those years was feeling like I never thought I'd make it. So much so, that I decided I WASN'T going to do it any more. And if it hadn't been for a good friend who pulled out some super-human characteristics from deep within her persona and came to see about me, I wouldn't be here today. I don't know if Amy had people like that in her life. Actually, I have no idea what it was like for Amy- her level of...well everything was at a level I might not ever experience... (instead- I've got a whole ton of other of life's lovin' in spades!)

We'll miss you, sweetheart. I'm sorry it ended so sadly, slowly, and seemingly unkind. Addiction is an awful, despicable sickness.

Legends

Legends

Some Thick Stuff; Back In Rotation.

Episodes Re-posted.
(New) Legends. Back from May 2009.
[...your ears might burn a bit from this one, SK and Decompose get a bit grimy on their lyrical!]

Stay Tuned for This.

OK. So maybe I reacted a little harshly by having pulled all the mixes from podomatic and contemplated the meaning of life by getting all shoegazey with my navel spelunkishness.

The good news is I'm back from all that. And not a moment too soon to understand that the world's waiting for everyone to step up and out with their best bests. It's what you're gonna get. So listen up to the update posting to podomatic later on today...

and look forward to a rotating reposting, rebroadcasting of bwlp back issues with pix slideshows!

Lessss GO!!!

Step Two: Go Acoustic.

So the what comes next in the process is the translation of the electronic dbb versions into renditions on the acoustic guitar.
Thanks to those who listened and tossed feedback.
Rehearsals this week look like:
Arboreal, By The Blow, Ingenue, and Amnishen

I'll crash a few open mics next month to spec the songs out.
Life Arsenal will have more clean and pronounced mixes of the electronic versions as side one- as well as the acoustic set, side two.

Limited vinyl only. It's how we're getting down in the new...
Look for announcements mid-September.
That's all for now.

the deal.

...so what up?
it turns out life just needed a little tweaking. it's OK to sit for awhile.
but what comes through is what's real. and the breeze sifting through my door
is just a request to be true to self. it's just a little zany when self looks like so, so many things.

but i think things are back on lock.

just doin' the deal.
i didn't as for this.
it is what it is: just drive.

Down Here On Earth.

I was shaken awake by a 3.3 magnitude earthquake this morning in Emeryville, CA at 3:51 this morning. A brother wakes up at 4:30 on the daily as it is!
(it's ALL about the USGS, folks!)

NO going back to sleep, so it's a wonderful time to catch the laundry room,

dolo.

My truck needs new tires- gonna do that real early when my dudes open up at the 'O'.
Summer school's over 'just-like-that'.

And there's nothing but space....

oh, and J-Lo and Marc Anthony are divorcing. It makes me wonder:

are people really meant to be with one anther at all? I mean we procreate and stuff, but I mean really....
are there truly an infinite amount of experiences to be had with one special person? And is anybody out there really capable of creating and crafting a beautiful life's expression to truly see such an endeavor through? And I don't mean for the 'kid's-sake'. I mean for real.

Like from the soul?

Like a person loves music?

The answer lies in the dub.

It's A Family Thing.

So, I let my son in on a $25 gift certificate to spend as a treat today.
He goes straight for the Lego Star Wars franchise stuff every time. And he's a patient one. He savors the package images, imagining how much fun it will be when we get home to build it.
"Hold up, ..let me see if the new Wax Poetics magazine is out..." I way before we make our way up to the counter.
Sure enough it is.

On the way home after savoring ever square inch and detail of his package, he
meanders across the cover of this months WP issue.
"And this guy has the disco pants...
...and this guy's showing his tummy...
...and this guy has the peace necklace...
..and...

"Who is this?" he asks finally.
"It's Earth, Wind, and Fire. They look so funky because they play such FUNKY music!" I contribute.
"I'll play you some when we get home."

So he's busy building his new vehicle, putting the figures all together, working on the droid ship, engrossed in the instructions...

while EW&F are on in the back ground.
A few "Oh, I KNOW this song!" comments pop out..until deeper in the album, less familiar tunes arise.
He's working intensely. Happy; showing me bits and pieces of completed parts of his new toy.

I realize this is the new generation's vehicle for album cover perusal and liner note ogling. Wax Poetics is keeping the family chain on lock for wonder and exposure to the choicest masters of funk, soul, jazz and hip hop.
On the back cover is Ramsey Lewis.

He asked about him, too.

And it's a beautiful scene.
Just splendid.

Summer. Copa America. Musica. Vida! Vida! Vida!

This summer I’m in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brasil, and Mexico. Figuratively, of course. Each day begins with a serious foray into Spanish studies over oats. (I know, most of us North Americans should have been exposed to this in high school; I was working my French...)

Copa America!!!
Yup. Still captivated by the footballing talents of South American teams like Uruguay, Brasil (always...) and Argentina. It’s hard to contain my joy of watching such individuals like Luis Alberto Suárez Díaz move with such grace, majesty, and SPEED....

..so I translate my inspirations into musical selections. Particularly, if only for kitsch’s sake- it has to be an all vinyl fest. In August I’ll be spinning at a pop-up dining experience in North Berkeley.

For the uninitiated, a pop-up is a private party, usually with a flat fee prepaid, so that you can just come and partake in all the lovely jubblyness of it all.
Figuring best targets come from within. Putting one and one together, I’ll be flying those fine dining listeners to South American coastlines and inner regions. Yet,think, time travel portal links to New York’s Palladium at 53rd & Broadway circa 1960 meets Bossa Nova meets Salsa- freak it: think drum, rhythm, and something sweet.
Very sweet. Everything aforementioned in a blender.

And tell me, why would someone cry at the end of El Cantante on a warm Emeryville evening in July of 2011? But there I was. bawling like a newborn, slapped for a life-check. I knew the story, but the dang. Such sadness!!!
[ What is UP BRAH'? ] Let's just say, a lot of stuff is moving around inside.

And as recently discovered from someone kind and beautiful, the title of a Violeta Parra poem says it all:

Gracias a La Vida

Gracias a La Vida (Thank you to Life)

Poem by Violeta Parra
Song by Mercedes Sosa

Gracias a la vida, que me ha dado tanto.
Thank you to life, which has given me so much.
Me dió dos luceros, que cuando los abro.
It gave me two beams of light, that when opened,
Perfecto distingo lo negro del blanco
Can perfectly distinguish black from white
Y en el alto cielo su fondo estrellado,
And in the sky above, her starry backdrop,
Y en las multitudes
And from within the multitude
el hombre que yo amo.
The one that I love.

Gracias a la vida, que me ha dado tanto.
Thank you to life, which has given me so much.
Me ha dado el oído que en todo su ancho
It gave me an ear that, in all of its width
Graba noche y día grillos y canarios
Records— night and day—crickets and canaries,
Martillos, turbinas, ladrillos, chubascos
Hammers and turbines and bricks and storms,
Y la voz tan tierna de mi bien amado.
And the tender voice of my beloved.

Gracias a la vida, que me ha dado tanto.
Thank you to life, which has given me so much.
Me ha dado el sonido y el abecedario.
It gave me sound and the alphabet.
Con él las palabras que pienso y declaro,
With them the words that I think and declare:
“Madre,” “amigo,”hermano,” y luz alumbrando
“Mother,” “Friend,” “Brother” and the light shining.
La ruta del alma del que estoy amando.
The route of the soul from which comes love.

Gracias a la vida, que me ha dado tanto.
Thank you to life, which has given me so much.
Me ha dado la marcha de mis pies cansados.
It gave me the ability to walk with my tired feet.
Con ellos anduve ciudades y charcos,
With them I have traversed cities and puddles
Valles y desiertos, montañas y llanos,
Valleys and deserts, mountains and plains.
Y la casa tuya, tu calle y tu patio.
And your house, your street and your patio.

Gracias a la vida, que me ha dado tanto.
Thank you to life, which has given me so much.
Me dió el corazón, que agita su marco.
It gave me a heart, that causes my frame to shudder,
Cuando miro el fruto del cerebro humano,
When I see the fruit of the human brain,
Cuando miro al bueno tan lejos del malo.
When I see good so far from bad,
Cuando miro el fondo de tus ojos claros.
When I see within the clarity of your eyes…

Gracias a la vida, que me ha dado tanto.
Thank you to life, which has given me so much.
Me ha dado la risa, me ha dado el llanto.
It gave me laughter and it gave me longing.
Así yo distingo dicha de quebranto,
With them I distinguish happiness and pain—
Los dos materiales que forman mi canto,
The two materials from which my songs are formed,
Y el canto de ustedes que es el mismo canto.
And your song, as well, which is the same song.
Y el canto de todos que es mi propio canto
And everyone’s song, which is my very song.

Smitten.
