root
once a month i go to a musicians meeting where we bring a track we take 24 hours or less to produce.
it's like a challenge, or at least an exercise in practice.
check out root... little something produced over Sunday and Monday.
at the myspace page for the cut- up only through Friday, 'cause the
remix is going on Come Winter.

BWLP December 2009 Podcast
December’s issue of Birds Who Like Pomegranate comes in two parts; a 2 disc cd set if you were to download it or find yourself as the lucky recipient of where they might be via gps locator. Yeah, we’re going there, because sometimes you need to get out and get your groove on in the name of seeing lovely places you might not have gone otherwise.
Or, maybe if you’re in East or West Oakland, you might find an autographed set at a bus stop. Play ‘em when you get back to the crib though... there’s no disclaimer on explicit lyrics- b’now!
There’s nothing but good music at our year’s end. Did we get it all? No. Is it all previous unreleased tracks? Pretty much. Some pieces are newer than others- but all the artists are some of our favorites: Finale, Scarlem D and Mr. Blue, Skyzoo, Kissey Asplund, Gwen Bunn, Presto, and 22 others.
Good dj’s tell stories in their mixes and compilations. Sometimes at a club, it’s an instance of instant- the crowd response dictating what gets pumped through the speakers, for when and how long...the ride is a product of place and time. But when it’s prepared for you in advance, like our podcasts, we get an opportunity to tell you a story. Most of the time you might not notice the tempo changes and subject matter. But believe us, it’s been quality crafted for your benefit.
For instance in part one, you might notice a perspective aimed from a season but winds and twists you through a 6 car deluge of mind. Real talk for real times. I’ll cut it out. But we just wanted you to know that for us, music is more than a show and a paper chase. For us, music is expression and the higher pursuits of life’s exactness.
We’ll be replacing Mike Dream’s birthday podcast and the Back to School edition to make room for these in our limited storage space. No worries, we’ll reprise them in the future as time permits.
Thanks for checking in.

Before Your Faculties Leave You
...believe that self-reflection can serve you well. There’s nothing like enjoying Thanksgiving with people with their own interesting bottles of perspective. And when the time comes to share the wealth and have a tasting of all outlooks, stances and reasoning- well it can get a little like Biggie’s Party and Bullshit.
I mean you find out who thinks Obama’s insistence on revamping health care is going to ruin the country- from someone like say, a lifetime nurse who is a cancer survivor. With rebuttals to confront the short term memory loss of the gradual and deliberate degradation of one said countries image and word through insufficient foreign policies as ingredients for our current political stew.
(I know, I know, I can hear all the "awwwwwww -isht"'s now..)
Or maybe it’s conversation about the social stratification across our nation that is surely finance based. Swaths of class position, determined by your annual income, inheritance, lineage and or place of origin that color our landscape from the Pacific to the Atlantic Oceanic coasts. Sound waves awash with sentences that tell of how two young black women would look a man like b.phlecksi parmella up and down at the World Trade Center, hone in on his Yale sweatshirt, and vehemently let him know, “YOU didn’t go there!”
(He’s let go of that, but sends a warm Thanks for the lovely introduction to the East, ladies.) In that simple statement, they let a young black man know so much more...
- whom was only in New York by invitation from a long gone art hero- Mr. Keith Haring.
Life most certainly has it’s challenges - our conviction is this:
No matter what your preoccupation or aspiration, if you can find the time to make sincerity, patience and introspection a priority- these practices will indubitably see you through the fires that will decimate your landscapes of safety.
The BWLP message at the dawn of 2010 is to adopt your heart with a conviction towards truth. Not a truth that so much bears your own stamp of approval- it's rarely that... but the truth of what is, right then and there- without thought immersed in pure experience-
and move with who you are- from moment to moment.
We understand that this philosophy doesn’t appear compatible with planning-
but we're convinced there’s a bigger one for each and every one of us.
BE about it y’all.
Blessings to you.
"..a rock on, and YOU don't stop!"

Tippet and the Angels: Thanksgiving Boy Howdy!
okay, okay, Phil Tippett- sir animation himself- crafts deftly movement endowed imagery here in our neighborhood in West Berekeley- meanwhile Hell's Angels' Sonny Barger has breezed around the way a few times on his blue saddle-boxed hog...reminding me that there's only one Bay Area.
And we're all about it.
from C.W. Nevius in today's SF Chronicle...
"On Wednesday, the local chapter of the motorcycle gang will be downtown at St. Anthony Foundation, helping the faith-based dining room prepare for its annual free Thanksgiving dinner. Are you sensing a photo op?
This all came about because, although St. Anthony's has a large and enthusiastic group of volunteers, slicing up hundreds of turkeys takes some serious elbow grease. Trying to think of an organization with muscular guys who wouldn't mind doing some carving, someone suggested the Hells Angels.
"When we reached out to get some help carving turkeys this Thanksgiving, the Hells Angels stepped up immediately and graciously," said St. Anthony's media manger, Francis Aviani.
But the dinner is still short about 1,000 pounds of turkey. If you'd like to contribute, St. Anthony's has curbside drop-off beginning at 8 a.m."
Happy Thanksgiving to you and Yours

GO South; Louisiana Edition October 2009 BWLP
all right, already. whats' good? well today it was the Dragon Boat Festival at Treasure Island. good people, no STRAIGHT UP GORGEOUS people, (nothin' like REAL rowers, yo.) but anywho...
on with whas'up:
chilling with my son watching boats go zoom on a stellar Bay Area day, eating bagels with cream cheese in the lower Haight around 10:30 AM on a Saturday morning, copping more Rice milk at Trader Joe's, eating popovers and homemade potato soup with neighbors...and of course,
mixing the latest edition of BWLP!
welcome to a very special october 2009 edition of birds who like pomegranate mixed media music magazine. it’s good to be alive- just bust the tracks in this months edition. we mix it up with a HEAVY dose of n’awlans with some international flavor. it’s like the gumbo my auntie didi used to make: with the crab, the okra, the tomato base, onions, spices, home made rolls, chitlins, sweet potato pies, fried chicken, croquettes...no, no no, this is real shit- with my own folks from New Iberia and Lafayette and a last name originally delcambre. you still don’t hear me though...but maybe you do. it’s 2009 and a whole new bumper crop of emcees are cutting their teeth in a world where indie rap is developing alot like punk rock did in the 70’s. i am- can only imagine it to be for them. i mean i had my cookie crews, stetsa, too short, latifah’s, shineheads, scott la rock’s, fab five freddy’s, and sha rock’s. i mean i grew up with that. original b-boy m’damn self. but now?! hmm. and what’s it like to be somebody like jay z right now? with so much hating on success for just trying to come true. well...
let’s peep it.
s’go... project mooncircle doin’ lambent- smoothness extract, tygah woods doin’ i can’t help it, lyrikill doin’ this man, og scraper bike historical 101 from the bay with baby champ, fred, and lil d (ain’t nothin’ like the town special addy), blaze the verbal chemist doin’ message to the people, 5th child doin’ hip hop live, slangston hughes doin’ the righteous way to go, wes b doin’ beats breaks and rhymes, j-dubble doin’ still fan tas tic, zaki ibrahim & darm malone doin’ zaki dub a stand (Canadian special addition), vohnbeatz and MPAK featuring lil d doin’ candy bars, and mr str82dapoint doin’ you got me, fin.
Until the gift mix edition mid October.

Bode Finished It.
It looks like the Peralta mural project over in West Oakland had to be completed by Mark on the dolo. It's sitting pretty on a rainy Saturday, here in the Bay.
More flix to come. It was a nice little destination on my weekend errands drive with my son.
Just cruising to the upcoming gift mix for this month, also soon to come to the podcast site. I'm coming through with a little something for the intro. But with school in...it's a hustle. But if Slick Rick can do WorldComm 8 to 5, heck I should be able to a little some' some' m'damn self! (tee, hee!)
Also, it looks like April BWLP previous bwlp was listed an itunes notable- so I'll have to put that back up.
Here's the set list for that episode:
Wayward Saints, Voodoo Jive
Presto, Conquer Mentally/On feat. Sadat X & Large Pro
Presto, State of the Art feat. Blu
Visionaries, Crop Circles
Visionaries, If You Can’t Say Love feat. Rhettmatic

here's one of my latest entitled:
prettiness lyrical
“It seems like all the mornings, afternoons, evenings blend together living the inside like everybody sees it. then realizing the whole thing’s invisible. indivisible of self. until it speaks...just the other night my buddy from back in the day said, hey b, you remember so and so- my little hood thang? Yeah man she’s at a center in Richmond on medication, mind all fucked up and shit.
In an instant I just spat- man you know I always thought that shit would happen to me.”

Outdoor Geurilla Performance in the Bay
okay, several years ago we launched an outdoor performance series featuring musicians, emcees, spoken word types in public spaces.
so with all the proliferation of public art popping up all over, we decided to dedicate some time to hosting the Bay Area's finest folks you may or not have heard of.
outdoors.
nothing original here, except the artists.
all it took was a few flicks of that piece on Ashby and Telegraph.
it just makes sense.
the bay area is just too flush.
coming at you weekly starting in September through December 2009.
...bless the mic with the gods.

Saturday Richness in the Town
I was told by a dear friend that a state of sapped creativity is a byproduct of ill communication... or a communication blockage, altogether.
Yeah, so I'm on production blackout, personally until December- taking time off to get the script together for my dolo spoken word show,
Adjacent Queen's Kings; Word Life! No Act.
So in the meantime I get to smile around Oakland knowing that the hip hop disciplines continue to play out around me.
Bust the Mark Bode and a wheat pasting by an unknown artist (until I find out who dunnit...I'll ask across the street at the Dream Yard)
It's about sustenance, right?
Don't worry, we've got a really nice September 09' Back to School Edition of BWLP on tap for 9/3 posting.
Wish me luck on taking some stuff to a new level.

BWLP August 2009 Podacast
The August, 2009 edition of Birds Who Like Pomegranate Mixed Media Music Magazine hones in on love.
As in: take off your shoes when you come in the house knowing the last supper is hanging in the front room colored by the comforting scent of adobo translating the vibe.
As in: the familiarity of the 3 foot tall rice dispenser in the kitchen, love.
As in: the joy of feeling at the top of ones game, hands clasped around your instrument- backstage, only to go on later live. Feeling like you were born to do it.
Bone up on your Tagalog for a few tracks. Oakland, San Leandro, San Diego, Las Vegas, Pilipino, and Mogadishu (and Berkeley, of course) is in the house.
We can't forget to mention our new favorite artist, the stratospheric Gwendolyn Bunn.
On Friday, July 31st, catch us on the web via a few portals:
birdswholikepomegranate.blogspot.com
doiseauxrecordings.podomatic.com, or on
www.myspace.com/hiphopmakenice.
Go somewhere with your hip hop.

First off, peace to Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys for a safe and full recovery from his recent cancer discovery.

Just a little something to chill to. BPP grabbed some records and saddled in behind the one and two's.

Go and do what you do to some chilled, layed back grooviness.
Cheers.

From my homie film maker supremo Mike Hamm:
Race To The Bottom - will be screening in the city (SF) this Sunday at 4pm with the SF Living Wage Coalition, it should be good, come check it out if you can, see you all!
Race To the Bottom (20 m) US 2008
By Jonathan King, Michael Hamm
This story is about the 2,000 independent truck drivers working at the Port of Oakland. The film gives us a look into the lives of the drivers and their struggles to earn a living wage, support their families, and stay healthy as they do their jobs, transporting goods in and out of the port. It also shows their efforts to build a community coalition to protect their jobs and their health and make their voices heard.
